Description about UPSC

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is India’s Central Recruiting Agency. It is responsible for the appointments to and examinations for the All India Services and group A & group B of the Central Services. It is one of the most awaiting exams at the national level. Every year UPSC releases its schedule for the examinations to be conducted in the upcoming year. The examination is divided into three phases the first one is the Preliminary Examination in which lakhs of students take part all around the nation, the second one is the written Mains examination and the third phase is the Personal Interview; all of which are mentioned elaborately in our UPSC section.

The Civil Services(UPSC) Examination offers the widest range of jobs in India and is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). UPSC Top 2 services are Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and the Indian Police Service (IPS) along with the other central services, Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Revenue Service (IRS) etc. Due to the importance and nature of these civil/public service jobs, UPSC takes absolute care in selecting the right people.

The Civil Services Examination comprises two successive stages:

1.Civil Services Preliminary Examinations (Objective Type) – for the selection of candidates for Main Examination.
2.Civil Services Main Examination (Written Test and Interview) – for the selection of Candidates for the various services and post.

First Stage Prelims:- The Preliminary Examination will consist of two papers of Objective type (multiple choice questions – there are four alternatives for the answer to every question) and carry 200 marks each.

1.Both the question papers will be of the objective type (multiple choice questions) and each will be of two hours duration.
2.The General Studies Paper-II of the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination will be a qualifying paper with minimum qualifying marks fixed at 33%.
3.The question papers will be set both in Hindi and English.

Second Stage Mains:- It has nine theory/descriptive papers

1.Out of nine papers, two language papers (English and Regional Language) are qualifying in nature – 300 marks each paper.
2.GS 1, 2, 3 and 4 are four general studies papers – 250 marks/each.
3.There is one essay paper and 2 optional papers (based on the subject a candidate opts for) – 250 marks each.
4.Candidates qualify for the interview stage based on the marks scored in GS 1-4, Essay and Optional Papers and these scores are considered for the final merit rankings along with the interview score.

Candidates, who obtain such minimum qualifying marks in the written test of the Main Examination as may be fixed by the Commission at their discretion, shall be selected by them for an Interview or a Personality Test. The number of candidates to be summoned for an interview will be about twice the number of vacancies to be filled.

The Interview (the final stage of the examination) will carry 275 marks with no minimum qualifying marks. The Main Examination, (written part as well as interview) would determine their final ranking. Candidates will be allotted to the various services and posts keeping in view their ranks in the examination and the preferences expressed by them for the services and posts.

Minimum Educational Qualifications:
  • A degree from a Central, State or Deemed university
  • A degree received through correspondence or distance education
  • A degree from an open university
  • A qualification recognized by the Government of India as being equivalent to one of the above
  • Final year student can appear in exam

    * OBC: 9 attempts till 35 years of age.

  • Preliminary Exam:
  • Acts as a screening process. It consists of two papers.
  • Paper 1:- 200 marks, 2 hrs,100 MCQs.(Objective).
  • Paper 2:- 200 marks,2hrs,100 MCQs (Objective )
  • Both the papers have 1/3rd negative marking.
  • Second paper is only qualifying, need to secure minimum 33% marks in second paper.
  • Merit list will be based on Paper 1- So paper 1 is most important for selection
  • One who qualifies Preliminary Examination has to go through Mains examination- which is a descriptive examination

  • Description About Some Elite Services
    Indian Administrative services (IAS): Indian Administrative services is one of the most coveted services in India.As an IAS officer a person generally begins with position of SDM (Sub Divisional Officer). The areas under an SDM include law and order, general administration, and developmental work. There is a probationary period in the beginning of one’s career, and after that officers move on to the senior scale to become District Collector , Secretary , Chief Secretary or at highest level one may occupy the post of Cabinet Secretary.
    Indian Police Service (IPS) Typically, an IPS officer is involved in Public safety and policing. IPS officer generally begins his/her career as the Deputy Superintendent of Police, and the officer can then rise through the ranks of the State Police to become Commissioner of Police. Alternatively, an IPS officer can also work in national government agencies such as the Intelligence Bureau (IB), the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), Criminal Investigation Department (CID), and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and can become the Inspector General of such a specialized force. Senior IPS officers also get placed in Cabinet Secretariat or at senior levels in other protective forces such as the Border Security Force (BSF), the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). India’s current National Security Advisor , Mr Ajit Dhobal is an IPS Officer.
    Indian Foreign Service (IFS). The IFS Officers are the career diplomats of India,who represent India in foreign land. IFS officers man the embassies of the government of India all over the world. They are involved in bilateral political and economic cooperation, trade and investment promotion, cultural interaction, press and media liaison as well as a whole host of multilateral issues.
    Indian Revenue Services (IRS). The Indian Revenue (IRS) officers are responsible for the collection of revenue for the Government of India..  Within Ministry of finance ,Department of Revenue, we have two Boards namely Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) and Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC), which are responsible for the collection of direct taxes and indirect taxes and manned by the officers of IRS (IT) and IRS (C&CE) respectively. IR (IT) officers are responsible for collection of all Direct Taxes like Income Tax,. An IRS officer starts his/her career as Assistant Commissioners and gradually moves to become IRS (Customs & Central Excise) officers are responsible for collection of all types of Indirect Taxes like GST.

    Part B—Main Examination
    Essay ​ : Candidates may be required to write essays on multiple topics. They will be expected to keep closely to the subject of the essay to arrange their ideas in orderly fashion, and to write concisely. Credit will be given for effective and exact Expression.
